TroyBoi concert review - October 14th, 2022 at 1015 Folsom, San Francisco CA, United States

the venue had cool photo-ops all over the placee

Okay, so picture this – it’s Friday night and Halloween season is in full swing. One of your most favorite dj’s is coming to a town near you and the venue they’ll be playing at is having its 33rd anniversary birthday party. You just got a hella cute pair of earrings and you’re ready to stunt. Wwyd??

You already know what I did – I bought tix for that event so fast. Read on to learn more about my experience of seeing TroyBoi for the first time at 1015 Folsom in San Francisco.

When I first heard about this show via the 1015 Folsom email list a few months before the event date, I already knew I was gonna go. My husband and I love Troyboi’s music and of course I have to go and support a fellow partly-Nigerian music maker. For some reason I waited until the email alerts were screaming at me to get tix because they were SELLING OUT FAST!!1! Thank goodness I hopped on that because the show ended up selling out like 2 weeks before the actual event – that should tell you all you need to know about the amazingness of Troyboi’s music.

Thankfully, I was able to line-up my work schedule so that I would be in the Bay Area on the night of the show. Lucky for me, my husband is always down to go to shows with me so we’ll treat the whole thing as a mini vacation. As stated above, I’d recently bought a super cute pair of earrings but I hadn’t gotten a chance to wear them yet. What better opportunity than to wear ‘em to a Halloween-themed trap concert?? I paired em with a black dress as seen in the pics posted here.

photo cred to my husband for this one :)

We get over to the venue about an hour before the doors open because there’s a pre-party happening for the venues 33rd b-day (you know I had to buy tix for that too). The pre-event was cool – open bar, cool dj’s on the top floor, free tacos, chill vibes overall. That’s probably my favorite part about this venue: it has 3 different floors that allow artists to perform at the same time, and concert-goers can meander up and down the floors all night and enjoy different sounds. 1015 does a good job at soundproofing the place too – you really can’t hear much from a different floor. I highly recommend this venue if you’re ever in the bay!

At the end of the pre-party, before doors, we leave the venue to burn. Unfortunately, since we left, we have to wait in line outside with the rest of the ppl who didn’t get pre-party tix. No biggie except its cold and humid in SF and I had just silk-pressed my hair and was wearing a short dress that night :’D. The bouncer there was funny. A tall dark-skinned guy who walked up to me so fast and started talking to me the second my husband stepped away to use the bathroom at the gas station down the street. Immediately he uses the N-word most likely because we’re two of few black ppl in line and maybe he feels insecure about living in SF with such a low number of ppl that look like him. I’m speculating xD but I feel like he was doing too much about being a minority person. Luckily I was lit AF so it was just funny to me lol.

special thanks to my new friend Marisa for taking these pics of us

ANYWAYY we get inside fast. It’s so cool inside! The pre-party was held on the top floor so we didn’t notice until we got in that the other two floors were fully decorated with blood, hanging skeletons, and other Halloween-type things. You can tell the staff went out of their way to create a creepy vibe there; perfect for the dubstep/trap djs playing that night. I don’t remember the names of the other acts but they were super good – I could feel the kicks and basslines in my soul, just the way I like it. When my husband and I went out to the smoking area, we met a super cool couple named Marisa and Jozef (bumming cigs is a great way to make friends). Turns out, Jozef is a supporting artist who’s set to play at the same time as Troyboi on a different floor (what an honor!). It’s always nice to run into another fellow music artist. Marisa studies physics and is super dumb smart. She’s the one that took the pics of my husband and I on this page!

peep the heart-shaped earrings with little pink hearts inside of them ♥

Sooo then it’s finally 1am and Troyboi comes out to the main stage on the 2nd floor and omg. When he opened with O.G I was trippin’ out!! I love that song. I think it’s my favorite track by him. It seemed like my husband and i were the only ones in the club who knew this song ‘cause no one around me seemed hyped for it (we were like right in the middle-front). But fuck it I don’t care, the song with that sound system and those vibes were so lit. He played some other gems like do you? and on my own, and did his own original stuff on the turntables. I must say he really knows how to put together a dj set. A lot of djs I’ve seen don’t even play their original works, and im all for showing new songs or trying some new things at a show, but PLEASE play at least a few songs that your fans are familiar with. After all, that’s what motivated most of us to show up! Troyboi’s setlist was on point. I enjoyed the night so much that I barely pulled out my camera for a pic! (Which explains why there’s only 6 pics on this post).

i lick my husband often. he doesn't really like it c:

I ended up missing most of his most popular song ili because I went down a floor to watch the end of Jozef’s set. It was also ready good! Very IDM and bassy. I sent him some of my a’capella vocals recently so I really hope he will work some of them into his future tracks. Shout out to Jozef White and his label Tabula Rasa records. Def check ‘em out on soundcloud or wherever you can find ‘em!

+1 for the hanging clown mask

So yeah, all in all the whole event was super cool and my ears went back to the hotel happy. I would definitely see Troyboi again if he comes around!
